This piece is inspired by the symbols associated with the journey home for the Palestinian diaspora. The hand is that of Handala, a cartoon character created by Palestinian political cartoonist Naji al-Ali in the late 1960s, who became a symbol of the Palestinian struggle for independence. Handala is grabbing onto the Key of Return, a symbol of the house keys that Palestinians held onto when forced into exile in 1948.
